Measuring to the center of the bottom bracket or a pedal spindle isn't particularly hard (see my tools for those!) and measuring to the center of handlebars is reasonably easy, the real challenge lies in measuring to the saddle, most notably - where do you measure to? If you measure to the top of the saddle, do you measure to the front of the saddle, to the middle, or the back? Or somewhere in between, like a point that goes through the middle of the saddle rails? Even if you have a consistent point for one saddle, it's likely to be different on another saddle.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEnter the \"80mm point\" - something I had only recently heard of when Ronan McLaughlin of Escape Collective posted about making his own out of a piece of particleboard. The idea is you take consistent measurements by measuring to the top of the saddle at the point where it is 80mm wide. In Ronan's case, this was as simple as cutting a \"C\" shape out of a piece of board, and that inspired the creation of this item. Apparently there is actual fit science behind the selection of the 80mm width which involves the distance of the sit bones, but honestly I'm no expert of fit-related stuff so can't say much more.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNow available in 70mm, 75mm as well as the original 80mm. Some saddle manufacturers or fitters use the 70 or 75mm width instead of 80mm, so if you need to work with those, you have that option as well. If you aren't sure, go with the 80mm.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUse is easy - place it on top of the saddle with the wings pointing down, and slide it back until it stops. Then, using one of my bike measuring aids to assist in finding the centerpoint of either the crank or the pedal spindle, measure to the point that is marked at the back of the tool which indicates the top of the saddle.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt's also possible to measure the saddle to bars distance. Hooking a tape measure on the back of the tool and extending it forward to the bars allows you to get a good measurement. This will allow the tool to hold itself in place on cranks with an 8mm hex retaining screw. Note that the peg is long to work with cranks with recessed sockets, and may be a bit long on the 8mm bolts that retain square taper and older OctaLink cranks, but it will still work with them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThird is the version which threads into the pedal end of a crank arm for folks who take measurements from the centerline of the pedal spindle. It's less versatile, but quite secure. I've switched to PETG plastic (a similar material to that used in bottled water bottles) which has good characteristics including high temperature resistance. PLA will work just fine, but you should know that it doesn't have the same temperature resistance. As long as you don't leave it on the dash of a car on a sunny summer day, it is just fine. The top of the next mark is on the opposite side and is the next millimeter length. I've been able to accurately measure bolts to a half a millimeter with this gauge - not that you'll often have to do that.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMeasuring conventional screws is easy - put the threaded part in the channel and then slide the head up to the end and measure directly. The top of each cutout is the measurement, and the cutout is 0.5mm wide, so it's possible to accurately measure to 0.5mm, not that that level of accuracy is often needed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMeasuring flat head screws is trickier as their rated length is from the top of the head, so I find it best to use something flat across the top (a tire lever or cone wrench works well) and then hold the screw up against that. The DT original covered a wider range (up to fat bike sizes) and had direct measurements marked on it, but I find this approach a little easier\/quicker to use for most of the thru-axle wheels most mechanics will see. Plus, it'll be more durable than the heavy card stock.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA simple stick that you can use to tell Boost hubs (110m front, 148mm rear) from non-Boost (100mm front, 142mm rear) quickly and easily. Put it through the hub and see what lines up. If it lines up on the side that says \"Boost\", then you've got a Boost hub.
